Recreation Center, Plaza and Parking
The main focus of my design proposal for Rex Hospital is a new recreation and rehabilitation center in the South-West corner of the site, anchoring the complex to Blue Ridge road.
Rex Master Plan
The buildings in yellow indicate new proposed structures. A deck on the Eastern edge of the site accommodates for all of the former surface parking. A new, relocated cancer center is proposed adjacent to the main entrance. In the South-West corner a proposed recreation and rehabilitation center is located adjacent to Blue Ridge road and on top of a second parking deck.
Cross Sections
The first section shows the relationship between the new proposed patient tower and the existing hospital as well as proposed underground parking. The second graphic shows the proposed recreation and rehab center over proposed deck parking. In front of the deck is a small plaza where the recreation center may be entered.
New Patient Tower
Simple sketch-up model of the proposed patient tower. The new tower would allow for 3 times as many patients and was designed with the intention of giving every patient a view to the outside green space.
Hardscape Diagrams
The hospital was dominated by massive surface parking lots sprawling over much of the site. One of the initial design concerns was to reduce surfacing parking and other non permeable surfaces while increasing parking to accommodate for intended growth. The upper diagram depicts existing hardscape while the lower diagram shows the hardscape for the design proposal.
Sand Drawing
Not sure if this qualifies as a sketch or not. I woke up early at the beach and used a stick to carve a simple design in the wet sand.
Through the Lens
The buildings in the background remain out of focus, while the streetscape in the reflection of the glasses is crystal clear.
